How’s the production value?

Right out of the box you will notice how lightweight the syma x5c quadcopter is. For a drone this size it’s really surprising. To me, it feels almost like a toy but boy was I wrong. It weighs in at almost 2 pounds and with a frame size of 31 cm x 31 cm x 8 cm., this makes it a suitable drone for both indoor and outdoor use. Be warned though with flying outside because I had difficulty fighting against the stronger winds.

This is the biggest drawback over the Syma x5c base model. There were some severe wobble and stability issues with the aircraft anytime there was even just a moderate wind. That said, Syma has taken note of this and decided to release an improved version of the X5C that corrects these issues. This was definitely a great move by Syma and it’s good to see a company that actually listens and improves their products based on consumer feedback. After taking the new X5C out for a few flight tests, I have concluded that the improved X5c-1 has much better stability when flying outside in windy weather.

The easiest way to tell the new version from the old is to look at the top of the canopy on the drone. The improved version will have a red X and say X5c-1 on top. There will also be a red “2.4g” logo stamped underneath which was not present with the base model Syma. You won’t need to worry about this if you’re purchasing directly from Syma on Amazon though because they only ship out the new version. Just something to keep in mind if you’re looking to pick one up second hand.

How does it fly?

The Syma X5C-1 can fly to a range of 50 meters but I did not have any trouble going further. You will lose sight of this drone easily because of it’s white color paint so be careful about how far you do fly. I did fly into trees a bit but luckily the propeller guards took most of the damage keeping my X5C-1 safe. LED lights are underneath the drone and they look nice at night.
Because of its light framed body, this quadcopter is very swift in the air with powerful sharp turns and even has the ability to perform total 360-degree flips without much difficulty. I experienced great flight maneuverability because of its 6-axis gyroscopes that help with low to moderate winds.

How’s the battery life?

You’re looking at a 7 minute flight time with its 3.7V 500 Mah Li-poly battery which is pretty average for this price range. You can squeeze a couple more minutes out by detaching the propeller guards and the camera mount. Extra batteries can be purchased through retailers like Amazon so I suggest you do that before removing the guards since they really help with safety. A full charge from a dead battery is about 100 minutes so that’s another reason for buying those extra batteries.

What’s so special about it?

Now what really makes this a number one seller among the community is the fact that it’s a drone with a camera. It’s by no means a GoPro but for under $60 it’s something most entry-level quadcopters don’t come installed with. With this affordable camera drone, you can record and capture footage at 720p. You will be getting a free 2GB MicroSD card included with the X5C-1 but if you like to capture video then having a few extras would be wise.

So that’s my review of the Syma X5C-1. I believe it’s the best bang for your buck drone that is available to consumers in this price range. Having a camera is a huge bonus to an already stellar aircraft. You really don’t want to pass up on this one!
