The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter Review 2021

There are many quadcopter drones that are designed more for beginner pilot. The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter, however, is a drone that has the more experienced and professional pilot in mind.

Overview:Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter Review 2021

The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter is an excellent mid-priced Quadcopter drone that comes with everything you need to get in the air within minutes of opening the included case.

There are certain aspects of the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter that really stand out – one of them being the excellent battery life. Most of the cheaper drones give you 5-10 minutes of flight time on one charge, whereas the Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter batteries will give you at least 15-25 minutes (dependant on how aggressive you flying the Quad). Not only that, but you get a second battery to charge whilst using the first.

The Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter uses GPS to track its movements, and when in this mode it flies level and takes a fairly strong wind to move it off course. By using GPS, the controller does need a fairly clear view of the open sky to pick up available satellites (which track the location of the drone).

If you do find it starting to disappear over the horizon, the included “back to home” feature is excellent. Flip the switch on the controller and the drone will make it’s way back to you on autopilot. If the drone loses the controller signal, it will do the same as well.

When testing, the Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter came back within 10 feet of the controller, which is an excellent result.

The drone also has a “Follow Me” feature, where the drone will automatically follow the pilot, adjusting its location to the transmitter.

The Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter is still flyable without using GPS but does require more precise control from the pilot to navigate, and functionality such as “Back to Home” may not work as intended.
The controller limit is approx. 800m (2624ft), whereas the video will begin to cut out at 600m (1968ft) away.

The included camera is a 16 Megapixel Full High Definition (HD) camera with 1080p 60 Frames Per Second (FPS) output. What this means it the camera is excellent, and the resulting video is of a far superior quality than any cheaper drones on the market. The camera does not have audio, however.

The camera is mounted on a 3 axis gimbal, and appears to be very smooth through all angles. This helps the image quality and color saturation to be of excellent quality.

The controller has an easy-to-read LCD screen, which displays, number of available satellites, altitude, ground speed and much more. It has four main screens for different setting and functions which are straight forward and easy to understand. It also has the ability for First Person View (FPV), whereby you can view what the drone camera sees in real time. You can also view this video content on a smart device by installing the free app.

Pros and Cons

For those learning how to use the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter, there is a setting called “Safe Mode”. This creates a virtual circle around the controller that the drone cannot fly in. If the drone starts in this area, it will automatically move out of the zone without pilot intervention. Although this is safer for the inexperienced pilot, it can be a bit unnerving to not have control.
The Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter is very quiet compared to some other drones on the market, as well as being quite durable. In one flight, the Quadcopter drone hit a tree at full speed from 40ft in the air. Although the blades had broken and the gimbal had been knocked out of alignment, everything else was fine. Thankfully, these are all easy to fix using the included spare parts.

It should be noted that the Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter is NOT waterproof, so flying over water is not recommended.

One thing to note is that the Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter will not operate over 8000ft in altitude. When the drone starts, it uses GPS to detect the altitude, and if it is over 8000ft the motors will be disabled and the drone will be unable to start. If you live or want to operate this Quadcopter drone in high altitude areas, beware of this limitation.

Yuneec customer care is very helpful and professional, and if you have any issues with this drone they should be able to help you.
